A new chapter begins

The Power of Reading: Our Journey Begins

Today marked the first step in a transformative journey – a journey into the world of reading, one that promises to touch the lives of young and old alike in our beloved village of Kalbaskraal. As we gathered for our inaugural training session, we were reminded once again of the profound importance of reading in our lives.

It was a diverse group of individuals, twelve in total, comprising both young and old, women and men, and representing different languages, including Xhosa, English, and Afrikaans. Some came with extensive educational backgrounds, while others had varying levels of understanding. Little did we know that what we were about to experience would leave an indelible mark on our hearts and minds.

Our guide for the day was none other than the remarkable Carol, whose wisdom and passion for teaching would soon become evident. At first, it may not have been immediately clear that we were embarking on a teaching session. Carol effortlessly wove her way through our group, sharing her knowledge with an ease that can only come from true expertise. It was only as the day drew to a close that we realized we had been participants in a masterclass in teaching.

The beauty of Carol’s approach lay in its simplicity. She didn’t merely tell us what to do; she showed us how to do it. And the most astonishing part? It worked. As we left the training room, each of us was not the same as we had been at the beginning of the day. We were now equipped with a powerful tool, a tool that had been subtly bestowed upon us by Carol’s teaching prowess.

What became evident throughout the day was the universal need for reading, irrespective of age or background. It was heartening to see the enthusiasm of the younger members of our group, their eyes gleaming with the promise of a new skill. For some of the elder men, there was a touch of nervousness, a sense of venturing into uncharted territory. But that’s the beauty of learning – it knows no age limits, and it’s never too late to embark on a journey of discovery.

As we look ahead, our hearts swell with anticipation. We are on the cusp of something extraordinary. Armed with little more than our passion, a few pencils, some paper, and the invaluable lessons from Carol, we are about to embark on a journey of teaching others how to read. Janine and Elrico will take the lead, imparting the knowledge they’ve gained from our training sessions.

In just two weeks, we’ll be in a position to lend our support to the students of Primary School O.J. Erasmus, opening doors of opportunity and igniting the spark of curiosity. Our village will witness the birth of tutors, mentors who will shape the minds of our youth and kindle the love of reading.

This journey aligns seamlessly with the imminent launch of Saskia’s Place, our library, which promises to be a beacon of knowledge and imagination for our community. Here, residents will find a treasure trove of reading materials, inviting them to embark on journeys of the mind, to explore worlds beyond our village.

The importance of reading cannot be overstated. It’s a passport to knowledge, a key to unlocking our potential, and a bridge to connecting with the world. Today’s training session reminded us of this truth, and we eagerly await the impact we can make on the young and those who seek to enhance their reading skills.

As we move forward, let us remember that the power to teach others how to read lies within us, and it’s a gift we are eager to share. Together, we will light the way for our community, one word at a time, one page at a time, one reader at a time.

No-Stone House

Has moved to Skool Street. Come and see Saskia's Place, the library or come and watch the reading programmes take place. OR if you would like to sit in at Jo's Cafe' a place of safety where young people can just come and be. We will start soon with out Saturday morning programmes.

Our Team

The team has a mix of youth and experience, energy and wisdom. The bulk of the team live in Kalbaskraal. Again, this is headed up by Heike (with 24 yrs of outreach ministry experience) and Mark (40 yrs of coaching at various levels and sports). We can then add Jo-Anne with her 30 years of ministry and outreach.

Our Relationships

We have strong relationships with many ministries and companies. Each supporting us in various ways and in Kalbaskraal and out. Our prime focus is to be a complete service provider for the local primary school OJ Erasmus, and sourcing any resources that they require. Keep in mind that this is a model we are building to move onto other rural schools in the Swartland.
