The No-Stone Reading and Remedial Programme Unveiled
Hey, No-Stone community. We’re here to share the unfiltered reality of our Reading and Remedial programme launch in Kalbaskraal—a village entrenched in the tough and unforgiving grip of poverty. In the first week, our expectations were shattered, not by an overflow of eager learners, but by the harsh reality of the struggles our community faces.
Rather than the anticipated 8-12 kids, we were faced with a staggering 40, underscoring the urgent need for educational support in a place where opportunities are sparse. Sorting through the attendees, we made the tough decision to exclude the older kids in grades 5 and 6, acknowledging the harsh truth that we can’t save everyone.
Our initial plan was to prioritize the original 8 kids, but circumstances forced us to adapt. Now, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, we focus on those sent to us by the school. Wednesdays are open for anyone, but punctuality is non-negotiable—a lesson in more than just showing up on time.
Our Reading champs, while local, aren’t immune to the struggles. They’re navigating a tough path, and we’re in the process of training five more individuals from the community. The goal is to create a lifeline of literacy, passed on by those who understand the challenges firsthand.
Amidst the difficulties, some mothers have stepped in, not just sending their kids but also taking part in the program. They’re being trained, not out of excitement, but out of necessity in a village where every hand is needed to break the chains of illiteracy.
The air in Kalbaskraal isn’t buzzing with excitement; it’s heavy with the weight of challenges. But here we are, facing the reality head-on. The Reading and Remedial programme isn’t a fairy tale, but it’s a beacon of hope in a village where hope is a scarce commodity.
Stay with us as we navigate this tough terrain, confronting the struggles of our community and striving for a better future, one page at a time.
