Today marked another milestone for the Roots & Wings Project as we kicked off the next phase at the No-Stone Community Campus. True to form, Coach talked the team’s ears off—an effort to ensure everyone buys into the shared vision, making it easier for us to work fluently and transparently as a cohesive unit.
The big squad was divided into two teams: the older folk and the younger folk (we’ll come up with better names for them soon). Coach shared his vision for the campus, which includes a 1600 sqm area being prepared for veggies. The elder team took charge of this task, getting the land ready for planting. Meanwhile, the younger team was busy clearing space to set up a small gravel netball court alongside a soccer field. It might not be huge, but it’s big enough to give the younger ones something to do in safety. Soon, some of the crew will be building poles and goals, making these spaces fully functional.
We also introduced the team to Thembi, our new No-Stone social worker. Thembi’s experience with DCAS makes her a tremendous asset to both No-Stone and the Roots & Wings programme. She will not only be available to the women for support but will also lead seminars, courses, and talks to impart valuable skills and knowledge. With all the resources at her disposal—or that need to be made available—Thembi is set to play a pivotal role in the growth and success of the project.
A huge shoutout goes to Shirley, our overall group leader and captain of the elder team, and to Janine as her 2IC. Kudos also to Kaylen and Shannon for stepping up as leaders of the younger team. Their leadership will be key as we continue to build and grow together.
Watch this space—big things are happening with Roots & Wings!
