Two years ago, we faced a tragedy that left a void in our community and in many of our hearts. Saskia’s life was a light that, though dimmed too soon, inspired us to create a place where her spirit could continue to touch others. Today, we’re so proud to announce that Saskia’s Place is thriving—alive with the energy of young minds from Grades 1, 2, and 3, who come here for reading lessons and early education. This haven for literacy has become a cornerstone for growth in Kalbaskraal, offering children a nurturing space to build their futures.
Now, alongside Saskia’s Place, a memorial garden has been planted—a peaceful area dedicated to her memory. This garden stands not just as a tribute, but as a sanctuary where the community can find inspiration and connection. This space, filled with greenery and blooming flowers, represents resilience, hope, and the beauty that can come from collaboration.

The realization of this vision wouldn’t have been possible without the collective efforts of many dedicated groups. Thanks to Goedgedacht and their ‘Care for the Planet’ program, as well as the SEF program’s administrative support, Saskia’s garden took root. We’re especially grateful to Japhta and his team, whose hands-on training for the 20 women on our Community Campus made this all possible. Their expertise, materials, and teamwork gave life to a space that will be cherished for years to come.
This garden, and indeed Saskia’s Place itself, is not born of sorrow or burden—it is a celebration. We remember Saskia not only for who she was but for the powerful reminder she leaves us with: to make a positive difference whenever and wherever we can. Her legacy shines as a beacon of hope, especially for young people who might feel isolated or misunderstood. In her memory, we stand committed to being a community that listens, understands, and provides.
